The group originally formed as Kara’s Flowers in 1994 while they were still in high school. After releasing their independent album We Like Digging?, they signed with Reprise Records and released The Fourth World in 1997. However, the album received a lukewarm response, leading to the band’s hiatus as its members focused on college.

In 2001, the band reemerged as Maroon 5, taking a different musical direction and adding guitarist James Valentine. They signed with Octone Records and released their debut album, Songs About Jane, in June 2002. The album featured hit singles like “Harder to Breathe,” “This Love,” and “She Will Be Loved,” and achieved quadruple platinum status by 2005. Maroon 5 also won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist that year.
